why call it presidents’ day?

Feb 21, 2022

Today is a federal holiday. Originally established in 1885 in recognition of George, it was moved from his birthday date as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act. More 3-day weekends and labor unions loved that.

While today it’s popularly viewed as a day to celebrate all US presidents, (past and present), in 1971 it was still called Washington’s Birthday. But because it fell between the birthdays of Washington and Lincoln, many believed it was honoring them both. Then marketers saw the opportunity to make money with 3-day weekend sales calling them “Presidents’ Day Sales,” and the rest is forgotten history.

Call me old fashioned, but I’ll just stick to honoring good ole’ George. Let’s go Brandon! 😉

Speaking of our current president…

I doubt I’m the only one a bit nervous over the current Ukraine challenge. I struggle putting Biden’s sentences together almost as much as he does — I can’t follow along. Just me? So when White House officials said President Biden would be willing to consider direct talks with Putin as long as Russia does not invade, I don’t have a whole lot of faith.

My hope is Biden has some amazing back-up. You know, like the little kid that flexes his non-existent muscles and all the bullies run away… only because the Incredible Hulk is behind him and that’s what really scares the bullies? Exactly like that.

TIL (Today I Learned): Of the holidays switched from traditional dates — including Columbus Day and Memorial Day — only Veterans Day was returned to its original date, November 11th.
