high school seniors are dumb (some dumber than others)

The photo below is from the 1968 Crothersville graduation ceremony. It’s Mr. Pesky’s class.

Upon seeing this shared on Facebook, I wasn’t just thinking about the classmates that are dead already, but also the class motto — “We Give Our Best Today for a Better Tomorrow.” Not bad, actually.

Summation and motivation — class mottos.

  • I remember our class officers (me included), determining our class motto. We were idiots! We were the class that chose “Love Will Keep Us Together.” Seriously?? 🙄
  • The C’ville class of 1978’s motto was, “Looks Like We Made It.” Well… at least that one was true… made it to graduation at least.
  • The class of 1976’s motto, “On the Road to Experience,” is good. Life after high school is an experience alright.
  • The class of 1975 motto was “We’ll Never Pass this Way Again.” Welp, true dat.
  • And finally, the class of 2000 — my son’s class — did ok too. “A Mark in Our Memories” is sensible.

My favorite human, Benjamin, is the cute dude 2nd from the left wearing the light-colored cargos. The next 2 dudes standing in back to his right are both deceased — Nathan Jackson and Bobby Burdette.

I could go on with the phrases that were supposed to sum up the motivation and character of each year’s graduates at my tiny high school, but take my word for it — my class put out the WORST motto in the history of forever.

Now you know: Frank Sinatra carried 10 dimes and was also buried with them in his pocket after his son Frank Jr. was kidnapped in 1963. The kidnappers demanded he communicate by payphone only, and he was afraid he wouldn’t have enough coins for the conversations.
