My granddaughter is a Freshman in High School. She’s 15 and therefore has a viewpoint on everything. She doesn’t play around when voicing her opinions, and didn’t hesitate a second to give me expert beauty advice.
Don’t go gray, Nana. It would be too shocking!
I’m sick of coloring my hair every 3 weeks. I’m so tired of it that I’ve considered options insofar as how to transition to its now natural gray (or white?). Sitting at the breakfast table over the weekend, Colette and I were discussing her recent highlighted hair color. She grew tired of her dyed auburn locks and the highlights bring back some of her natural blonde. I think it looks great! Of course, being old I don’t think a 15 year-old should be coloring her hair in the first place, but it’s not 1975 anymore so I keep that to myself.

When I told her I was contemplating a transition to my old woman natural color, her scrunched up face told me exactly what she thought about that idea, but she still followed it up with words. She let me know gray/white hair was NOT my style and it would simply be too shocking. “You can’t do that,” she said flatly.
I’m taking her advice (for now) and sporting a hat.
Past due for a color, I simply stuck a hat on my head before braving the public. It’s the only viable option when it’s windy outside. Even a slight breeze will raise hair enough to display the roots when the color change is so drastic. Too bad I didn’t inherit my Mom’s blonde hair that just looked like she had highlights as it turned gray — in her 80’s I might add! Instead, I got dark, fine hair from my Dad who was bald before he hit 35. Just my luck.

At what age do you think women (and men) should stop coloring their hair?
I did a search on the average age in the US for women to embrace the gray and found there’s no precise, universally agreed-upon number. It’s an individual choice influenced by personal preference (and on the advice of grandkids), trends, and lifestyle — but statistics show many begin transitioning to gray in their 50s or 60s.
In other news…
With color on my hair last night, I watched the US Senate vote live on senate.gov. Cloture on the motion to proceed passed with the supermajority met and the filibuster has been overcome. 100 people had to say 1 word or show a thumb’s up/down, and while it could’ve happened in about 3 minutes it took over 2 1/2 hours.
And we have snow — first of the season, y’all.

Now you know: In 1934, Mussolini ordered that the Tower of Pisa be returned to a vertical position. 361 holes were drilled into the foundations, and 90 cubic meters of concrete were poured into them. However, the result was that the tower actually sank further into the soil!
