whatever happened to the little guy… it was bad

Jun 18, 2025

Yesterday’s vet appointment was pretty darned awful, not gonna’ lie. Just getting out of the house was a challenge.

Miss Merida Hyperactive was ready to go once she was dressed in her pink harness and matching lead. She was eager to go on an outing. BUT… Dharma wanted to go too and stood in the doorway trying to bully her way to the car. Hugo didn’t want to go, so keeping Dharma back while forcing Hugo forward required help from Ben.

I hadn’t driven 3 miles north when we were hit by a torrential rainstorm that had me in a line of cars going 35mph. Still, I was on time.

At the vet’s office:

Merida — Merida went in like she was on fire and was so excited to see everyone. My favorite vet tech, Kelly, took her while I went back to the car for Hugo. Merida got her shots and was weighed. She was 6 pounds down and is no longer obese at her 94 current pounds. She’s in great health.

Hugo — Hugo is amazing in the car and on the lead. No one was in the waiting room when we got there so we were ushered directly to an examination room. Hugo hid under my chair shaking while Merida was with Doc. Finished with dog #1, Mr. Vet then took Hugo’s lead from me.

That’s when Hugo went crazy and peed all over the floor. He didn’t poop on the floor until they had him in the back room and muzzled. (Pee in the foreground of the photo below and poop in the background.)

What happened to the little guy before he found me? I don’t know — but I DO know it was bad.

It was a traumatic experience! 😬

I feel horrible that Hugo is so terrified — and that he made such a mess. He is healthy and now weighs 55 pounds.

Doc took Hugo to the car while I led Merida… I’m sure it was so he could make certain the little turd didn’t get near any other person or dog in the waiting room. I went back inside to pay my bill. When I got back to the car, both dogs were in the front seats. Hugo jumped in the back seat when told move, but Merida was determined to ride shot gun.

The “seatbelt warning” beeped all the way home and I about lost my mind.

From here forward, I’ll take one dog at a time… and will consider tranquilizing Hugo for future visits to make it easier on him, and on the vet and office staff. All in a day’s work for a dedicated dog mom, I guess.

Now you know: Ken Allen, an orangutan at the San Diego Zoo, became famous for his many successful escapes. During his escapes, he would peacefully stroll around the zoo looking at other animals. He never acted aggressively toward patrons, but would throw rocks at Otis, another orangutan he “despised.”
