Rain and heat create ideal conditions for mosquito populations to thrive. It not only increases mosquito reproduction, but also extends their active season. That translates to more itchy spots forming when working outside — and no end to this torture in sight. At least here at the barndo we have a way to keep cool and deter the blood suckers.

My great aunt Opal from 100 years ago…
When I was a kid, I would spend a few days each summer with my Nanny’s oldest sister, Opal. Her granddaughter, Sherrie, was about my age and it was GREAT fun. To clarify, it was fun except at bedtime. They lived on a farm in a big ole’ farmhouse. No air-conditioning back then so we slept with the windows open. Their bedtime ritual was different from mine at home.
Once in bed, Opal would come in with one of those hand pump bug sprayers and mist the room. Even the sheet you were covered up with and your face (if you left it exposed) were wet with stinky stuff by the time she finished. I’ll betcha the bug solution was the same spray concoction they used on the farm animals.

Since I don’t have one of those sprayers… 😎
While I plan to try peppermint essential oil in coconut oil for a spray, I will not be blending garlic cloves with water to spray on my body. For Mr. Pesky’s garden, Deet will be required. And the rest of the time? I’ll be hiding out to keep cool and minimize exposure of body parts.

Now you know: In 2018, the Japanese minister, Yoshitaka Sakurada, admitted that he had never used a computer in his life… even though he was in charge of the country’s cybersecurity at the time.
