make weekend breakfasts great again

Nov 23, 2025

Weekday schedules are more hectic than weekend ones, even if you’re someone practicing retirement… like ME! If you have kids and jobs, there simply isn’t enough time in the mornings to have a sit-down meal. If you have grandkids, you’re more likely to see them on the weekends, and everyone has to eat, right?

Research says that family breakfasts are much less common than family dinners. When they do occur, it’s primarily on weekends.

Breakfast at lunchtime – is that brunch?

I don’t know if what we do on weekends would be called brunch, but my crew isn’t interested in food the moment they get out of bed. Weekends around here means sleeping in, drinking coffee, and then having breakfast closer to lunchtime. Still, that first meal — no matter what time it’s served — includes eggs, some sort of meat and bread.

Savory or sweet?

I love donuts as much as anyone, but I am NOT a fan of anything sweet first thing in the morning. For whatever reason, it makes me shaky. Not so for Perry. That dude could live on sweetie cakes, frosted cinnamon rolls, and blueberry biscuits with icing on top. Ben eats zero sweets. He has to be bribed to eat a piece of birthday cake once a year. Colette always asks for Eckrich maple breakfast sausages (which Scottsburg Walmart no longer carries!), and picks around at whatever else is prepared.

That only leaves the bread option to make a totally savory breakfast include something sweet. Instead of toast or biscuits, I’ll sometimes make rolls with some sort of icing. That seems to keep everyone happy because they’re sure to find something they like best.

Of course, some around here aren’t picky and will eat anything (and everything) in sight.

It’s time we make weekend breakfasts great again!

Having at least one sit-down breakfast each weekend should be a requirement… a law even! I’m going to see if I can get Marjorie Taylor Green to propose it before she leaves Congress at the first of the year. 😉

Would you vote to pass it?

Now you know: In 2008, there was an app on the Apple store, “I Am Rich,” that cost $999 USD to purchase. The app did nothing but display a glowing red gem and the text: “I am rich, I deserve it, I am good, healthy & successful.” Eight people bought it and Apple removed the app less than a day after its launch.
