the great yellow hunter

May 6, 2010

We’ve had Gracie about a year now, and she’s more and more at ease every day that goes by — but she still has moments of great insecurity, and tries so hard to please that it sometimes causes problems. Like today…

Three baby robins just learning to fly start flapping their wings in escape as soon as they hear me open the door to let the dogs outside. I didn’t see them until it was too late, and both Libby and Gracie instinctively take off in a great chase. The bird that chose a straight shot down the middle of the yard couldn’t get much over a foot off the ground and Gracie was closing in. I yell, “GRACIE!!

The great yellow hunter jerks her head back to look at me as she’s putting on the brakes which causes a 3 barrel-roll flop that squashes the poor baby bird. For the record, she had the name ‘Gracie’ before she came to live in the burg.
