hoosiers answer the call for help

hoosiers answer the call for help

I read this morning where Governor Holcomb activated the Indiana National Guard to help with hurricane relief efforts. Around 400 soldiers will be coming together today to be in Florida this week. Indiana Task Force 1 — a team of 80 central Indiana first responders — are already there and will be located just outside Milton’s cone for deployment once the storm passes through.

Those living in the south certainly need all the help they can get.

I spoke with another friend on Tuesday who said Duke Energy is sending employees to Florida, as well. It’s heartwarming to see people — and companies — helping other people.

The problems faced by many in Florida make my challenges seem small.

Thinking you might loose your home sure puts my current challenge into perspective. Heading to Seymour every day to get another house on the market is not fun — but the house is probably not going to be washed away this evening.

When you make a home your own, you paint the colors you like. You may choose a paint color to match furniture rather than stay with neutral walls. In many cases, that’s not what will help sell a house to others. I’m soon to begin painting like it’ my job. For this girl who continues to practice retirement… I guess it IS my job. 😉

Now you know: In 1900, a physician named Jesse William Lazear wanted to prove that yellow fever was transmitted by mosquitoes. He allowed an infected mosquito to bite him, and he became infected with yellow fever, proving the hypothesis correct. He died 17 days later.

minimal signs of fall locally

minimal signs of fall locally

First week of October is in the books but it continues to look like summer here at the barndo. Flowers are still blooming…

fall blooming flower

Mr. Farmer’s corn still has some green on the stalks so his fields aren’t ready to harvest yet. The grass still requires regular mowing and we need to go to war with some weed killer. And, while a few leaves are falling, most trees aren’t showing any autumn hues yet.

no fall colors yet at the barndo

Stay tuned in the coming weeks for fall transformations.

This week our high temps are around 10-15° cooler than last week so we know fall is here — it just doesn’t look like it yet. 🙂

if warnings for tornado threats were like hurricane predictions

if warnings for tornado threats were like hurricane predictions

My first cup of morning coffee still half full, I just watched a short video clip of people in their cars trying to get out of Tampa before hurricane Helene makes ground. Bumper to bumper even yesterday… cars are lined up on the interstate… it’s awful.

Unlike tornados, the length of warning time prior to a hurricane allows ample time for evacuation. In the instance of Helene, if I lived on the east coast of Florida north of Sarasota, I would’ve already packed up my most precious belongings — along with my hounds — and left at least two days ago.

Merida doesn't care about hurricanes

I would be an expert on the return home of shame.

Of course, leaving early means you might’ve packed up for nothing. The hurricane might weaken, or change course and miss your home altogether. I would be that weird Florida neighbor that all the brave residents make fun of. I would also be the one without fear of losing electricity and a toilet that flushes.

Tornadoes form rapidly and there’s little warning.

Living in Indiana, we understand that tornadoes are localized and short-lived. Just knowing your safe place is the best you can do. Of course, they’re incredibly destructive too — but my current return of shame is walking out of the bathroom.

What about you? Would you be a “ride it out” or a “get out” person?

At the very least, I hope you’re as thoughtful Juan on X… 🙄

Marco Rubio: 15-20ft storm surge projected for parts of Florida’s big-bend. No one will survive surges like this If you are in an evacuation zone please get out now!
Juan: Florida, you are a bunch of Trump loving crappy people, but I still want you to be safe during this huracain. Listen to evacuation warnings.

Now you know: The word “hurricane” comes from the Taino Native American word hurucane, which means “evil spirit of the wind”.

mother nature heard me loud and clear

mother nature heard me loud and clear

I complained about the lack of rain and Mother Nature heard me and delivered. Matter of fact, she’s still delivering and plans to deliver today and probably tomorrow too.

I rolled in yesterday just before the heavy storms hit.

By yesterday evening, Mr. Pesky’s rain gauge showed 1.5 inches fell throughout the day. Crazy considering the average amount of rain in Indiana during the entire fall season is only 3.27 inches.

We’re only 2 days into fall and are almost 1/2 way to the average amount. It will be interesting to see what we experience from now to the 1st day of winter — this year on Saturday, 12/21.

Even with all the rain, the good news is…

…(drumroll please)… the pool cover is still in place. Woot!

Home Depot: you need a snow shovel

Home Depot: you need a snow shovel

Anytime you buy ANYTHING, your email address will end up on their mailing list. More likely than not, your email will end up on multiple lists as they also sell your info. Sometimes, those pushy marketing emails bring your attention to something amazing! Like today… this really important message was in the mix with around 100 others and I’m just lucky I saw it.

Home Depot wanted to let me know I needed to purchase a snow shovel ASAP — and they have the perfect one for me. It’s even on sale for the next 5 days.

But it’s just recently turned fall!

Riding home from Seymour with Ben, I noticed the corn growing on the side of the road. It looked brown enough to be ready for harvest!

corn field ready for harvest?

The corn here looks like it has weeks to go before Mr. Farmer will be in harvest mode…

corn still green here

Who knows if the crops were planted near the same time or if the conditions were different (not sure how different since they’re not that far apart). What I do know is that I never really looked at corn before moving here. Heck… in Seymour, I wasn’t sure there was corn except in a can from the Jay C store. 😉

What seems to be consistent locally is the number of hummingbirds gathering at feeders.

Talked to my friend, Julie in Scipio, and we were both talking about how we have only a handful of hummers left. Sure hate to see those amazing little creatures hit the southbound trail. I hope they remember to stop here next year and bypass those pesky neighbors down the road.
