Today is a travel day for my favorite brother and sister-in-law as they make their trek from Vegas to Ft. Wayne. No longer Nevadans, they’re now Hoosiers although it will take them a couple days to get “home.”

(Click for an update of their journey at shelleyerwin.com.)

It’s not Indiana Scott’s dreading so much… but more that it’s Ft. Wayne. He loves the west, and I’m sure he’ll miss the weather there. Tammy is thrilled with Ft. Wayne because it’s where she’s from and where her parents, kids, and grandchildren are.

They’ll both miss their bigger home, I’m sure.

Vegas house is empty.

It’s a big downsize for them… the house in Ft. Wayne is 3 bedroom and neither of them have been in a 3 bedroom home for a whole bunch of years now. Even worse, the house sports only 1.5 baths. It has a finished basement and I’m sure that will help — not only with space but also for privacy.

Their entire lot is the size of the home they’re leaving so this should be interesting. But it’s a REALLY cute house, you guys… and is decorated so much better than mine. When there’s only 2 people, there’s no need for a large amount of living space anyway.

They’ll have about 28 hours of actual driving time and the weather in some of the states they’ll be passing through isn’t perfect right now. I’m hoping for a safe and uneventful trip.

Once settled in, they’ll be 3 hours from me. Katie is 4.5 hours from me and there’s a whole lot more to do in Sevierville, TN than in Ft. Wayne, IN. Just sayin’. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Now you know: Vending machines are more deadly than sharks due to falling on people.

march has a little bit of everything in indiana

march has a little bit of everything in indiana

It’s another frosty morning in southern Indiana with more… you guessed it… WIND! That’s right — 35-40 mph winds coupled with a special weather statement warning us of an elevated fire risk.

Today is the 1st day of spring 2024.

Today is the first day of spring, but it doesn’t feel like it. Just wait though… it could feel like mid-summer before you know it. That’s because March is the month of extreme transitions in my slice of the world. It can see snow (flurries yesterday) to mild temperatures to severe storms.

The earth is amazing isn’t it? It was designed to constantly keep an equalized pressure. When this gets disrupted, we get wind. The stronger the lower pressure is, the harder the earth will fight to equalize it. The pressure struggle is real in rural Crothersville today.

Like me, ole’ Mother Earth is working overtime.

Yesterday, I decided to move my bathroom and closet upstairs. I logged around 16,000 steps and about all of them were made carrying stuff up and down a narrow and steep stairway. Today, we’ll be taking it easy around here. It’s going to be a day of rest and thoughts about the warmer days ahead.

Merida was so distracted by the sunshine she forgot where she left her bone. She’s been searching for it for about an hour and I’m not even going to give her a hint.

Now you know: A Japanese man, Yasuo Takamatsu, lost his wife in the 2011 earthquake. He has not stopped looking for her body for more than 10 years and has dived more than 800 times in the ocean to retrieve her.

First, I have a funny update to my earlier post about our local post office. When I got mail out of the box this morning, I noticed several envelopes with a rubber-band around them. Attached to the bundle was a yellow sticky note that said, “3/10 mailbox full.

That means they mashed that package in my mailbox, and then took the actual mail back to their USPS office to deliver 5 days later. Funny, right? ๐Ÿ˜

Captivating and unique Indiana skies…

The skies overhead in the Hoosier state are amazing. Changing weather patterns lead to dramatic cloud formations no matter the time of year.

Add to that how Indiana landscapes change with the 4 seasons, and you’re sure to catch nature’s beauty with a variety of backdrops without traveling anywhere.

I know. I know. I’m ate up with looking at and taking photos of the horizon from the barndo. You would be too if you went 10 years looking at privacy fences. The skies in Indiana have unique characteristics and I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to be able to enjoy the view.

From afternoon to evening…

While I took the above photo yesterday afternoon, the photo below that I took at sunset last night was just as lovely.

Now you know: Up to 20 percent of salmons raised in fish farms are depressed or suicidal. They have been measured to have similar serotonin levels as depressed mammals and will refuse to swim around or eat until they starve to death.

I understand that controlling vegetation along county roads is important for safety, but I think in Jackson County, Indiana, they go overboard in a big way.

How much wood chomping is too much?

The tree line on the barndo property sets back a decent distance from the road. But the property across from here had (as in BEFORE the county took action) honeysuckle vines and what you’d expect to see growing in rural Indiana alongside any county road. Last week, it was early morning when I heard what sounded like a woodchipper.

It actually WAS a woodchipper and it went down this DEAD END ROAD leaving a whole bunch of unnecessary ugly in its wake. I don’t see why it was necessary to chomp so far back… especially since there’s no outlet — it dead-ends at I65. So much plant absorbing CO2 was destroyed, our O2 level was likely decreased. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Jackson County, Indiana, is in need of an employee restructure.

It seems to me that county employees in Jackson County, Indiana, need a restructure — priorities are skewed in my opinion.

  • Such a big deal was made over a new driveway at the barndo. Remember that? (If you don’t, here’s the link.) I had no choice when they dug a ditch to avert water that wasn’t an issue for the existing driveway 6 foot west of the new one. Now I have a ditch to maintain. What a waste of taxpayer money for an unnecessary action.
  • Yet there’s NOTHING done about another property on this road whose sewer is absent a finger system. Walking by the ditch there in the summer it smells like straight-up shit. Maybe some of the county road workers should be allocated to the county’s health department instead?
  • Next, you have junk trailers moved in that connect to electricity by a cord so people can actually live in them. Old and decrepit “office-type” trailers and even travel trailers that can serve as family dwellings? Not allowed by county ordinances but not enforced — let’s move some of the overzealous road crew workers to the planning and zoning department.
    • Here’s hoping the newly reassigned health department employees recognize that the inadequate sewer is also being used by those living in the trailers.

I could go on and on, but I’ll stop here.

It’s said you should accept the things you can’t change, and it’s for sure I can’t reassign county employees. So I’ll just be grateful for the views I have that aren’t made ugly by my county — and that don’t stink because of their inadequacies.

Now you know: Joro spiders, extremely large orb weavers native to Japan but introduced to America, are eating invasive crop-destroying pests such as stink bugs instead of being invasive themselves. (Wondering how I can get me some! Even spiders are better than stink bugs.)

Yesterday, I said if you could subtract by 8 you might be a meteorologist. That was just another false weather prediction. When I went to bed around 1:30 AM this morning, it was 72ยฐF. Right now at around 8:00 AM, it’s 34ยฐ F. That’s not a difference of 8, but you can still be a meteorologist since accuracy isn’t a requirement.

morning after the storms

Go home, Jim! ๐Ÿ˜

Yesterday, on-air personality of The Weather Channel, (weather.com), Jim Cantore and his crew were in Charlestown, Indiana. They were there to provide up-to-the-minute coverage of the devastation caused by the predicted storms.

He should’ve went to Chicago instead. While a bit windy here about 25 miles NE of Charlestown, (my outdoor rugs had their corners turned up) we had no significant weather challenges.

My lightweight, wicker furniture on the deck upstairs didn’t even budge.

Now you know: In 2017, a lawsuit was filed in Austin, Texas by a man seeking $17.31 in damages from his date who had been texting during a movie. He argued that his date’s behavior was a threat to civilized society and the money sought was to reimburse him for the cost of the movie ticket. (He dropped the suit after she paid him back the money.)
