from the 1400’s to today – and it works!

First, let us today remember and honor the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. As we reflect on veterans and military personnel who are deceased, let’s also be thankful for the freedoms we have because of their sacrifices. ❀️

Random tip that I have to share…

Over 2 years ago, a piece of Teddy Bear’s furniture impaled my finger as I was dusting. I’m not talking about a little splinter… I’m talking about a PLANK of wood. I pulled out the big part immediately, but my darned finger has been sore off and on ever since then. There had to be some of that wood left in there!

The process is always the same: a large callous builds up and I pick at it, try to dig out a splinter, trim off all the calloused skin, and even use an emery board to sand the sucker down. A month or so later, the process is repeated. So Mr. Pesky told me I needed to put “drawing salve” on it. I thought he was crazy. I figured it was nothing more than a folk remedy.

prid drawing salve

Dermatologists says it’s BS — vets say it works. The vets are right!

Ichthammol, the active ingredient in drawing salve, dates back to the 1400’s and is made from sulfonated shale oil. It’s been vets’ go-to advice for treating abscesses on the bottom of horses’ feet for years. I put it on my finger — that was red and swollen all the way around to the nail — for 4 nights covered with a Band-Aid.

Last night, I picked out that 2 year-old splinter that was still about 1/4 inch long.

Yes, I took a photo. No, I’m not going to share it. Instead, I’ll share a couple photos from our late lunch yesterday.

Just one more thing — DON’T USE BLACK DRAWING SALVE!

Black drawing salve is used for treating skin cancer and has been known to result in death. Black salve is made from different chemicals (including zinc chloride and sanguinarine) and kills skin cells indiscriminately.

Local sheriff’s departments share photos of new inmates on Facebook. I don’t know if other counties across the US do it, but Scott County shares arrests frequently… Jackson County not as often, but they still do it sometimes.

Of course, arrests with photos are available on law enforcement websites for every jurisdiction, but you have to actively go to each city/county’s URL to see them. Sharing on FB puts it out there on everyone’s feed and attracts a whole lot attention.

Not gonna’ lie, I struggle with how I feel about this.

First, if the arrest is of an addict, sharing the photo shames the family… not the one arrested. What good does that do, really? On the other hand, when arrests are shared, I always look to see if they are of someone I know. That’s human nature.

Is it good to have the suffering of others served to us when we’re scrolling through FB to read the things shared by friends and family? I don’t think so. But… if I see my contractor has a prior for murder — or that someone I was going to hire to do work in my home was charged with theft — then is it a good thing? Yah, probably.

There are always 2 sides.

I agree with both sides.

The world is saturated with information. Some good… but mostly bad. The media saying, “if it bleeds, it leads” is so true, isn’t it?

What’s your opinion?

Add 3-minutes every single day for 30 days.

What if we unplugged from social media and information saturation for 3 minutes today? And what if we added another 3 minutes tomorrow… and continued this for 30 days?

At the end of that 30 days, every day forward we’d be cutting out one hour and a half of mindless negativity that penetrates our brains. Even more important… every day, we could add 1.5 hours of doing something that adds joy to our lives.

Who’s with me on this? πŸ™‚

it’s a big weekend – some good things going on and some not so great

it’s a big weekend – some good things going on and some not so great

Tomorrow I’ll be heading the the local funeral home. A classmate of mine, Rick (Fly) Smith, passed away and classmates are meeting for visitation as a group. Poor dude was in a horrible wreck recently and they didn’t think he would make it. He did… and then he died of a heart attack once he was back home and living life.

Rick is on the bottom row 2nd from the left:

Funny… I’m to the right and behind the 2nd guy lying down in front. Although my arm is behind him, it looks like I have my hand stretched across his belly.

Rick worked at Morgan’s for about his entire life. In high school, he was already working a 3rd shift there. He would often fall asleep in class and of course, his grades suffered greatly. I thought it was a good idea to write the answers to a test on the sole of my tennis shoe and cross my legs so the answers were visible for Rick to copy.

We got caught.

Good ole’ Tom Judd was the principal back then and instead of expelling either of us for 3 days, he said if I could get Rick to pass the class by tutoring him, the infractions would be forgiven. Rick passed, and I escaped the wrath of Polly. Pretty innovative punishment looking back on it now.

On to the good…

The Crothersville Alumni Banquet is Saturday. My brother is going because it’s his 50th year since graduation. Funny, I can remember when my Nanny got all dressed up to go to her 50th banquet.

And Sunday is Mother’s Day. Rather than brave the masses to eat dinner at a restaurant, it’s going to be smash burgers on the grill. I’m sure I’ll have photos to share after that. Ben has to work but I’ll betcha Katie and Chuck will show up at some point. πŸ™‚

from… lost with a Stephen King twist?

from… lost with a Stephen King twist?

I’m a HUGE fan of the series, LOST, and have watched all 121 episodes more than once. There’s a newer TV series out called “FROM (official trailer here)” that’s directed by one of the executive producers of LOST. Said producer also worked on Stephen King’s Under the Dome. To me, this plot feels a whole lot like Lost but includes King’s horror aspect.

The first season of the series FROM is available on Prime Video and the first 3 episodes of season two is available on MGM+. Episodes drop weekly. While I don’t think this show will ever become anything close to what LOST was at its peak, it kept Perry and I binge watching it after Ben insisted we at least give it a shot. Pretty smart to get people hooked on the series through Prime Video because now they have to subscribe to MGM+ to get the weekly episode drop.

Plot in a nutshell:

No matter where you are in the world, if you’re driving down a road and see a tree blocking your path with crows overhead, you’re going to take a detour and end up in a small town from hell with no way to escape. Human looking creatures emerge at night to kill and ravage the bodies of anyone not locked inside with a talisman to protect them. Everyone wants to go home.

Using a food ranking system:

LOST is a steak. FROM is an ear of corn. Corn is really good and ranks a solid 8, but steak is a 10.

Breakfast will not be served to the puppies until they pee outside in the grass. From the looks of it, breakfast may very well turn into brunch, lunch or even dinner. 😏

The sound of rain when you live in a barndo…

At the Seymour house, a tornado could’ve wiped out the neighbor’s home and I would’ve missed it. All brick, outside sounds were muffled almost to the point of non-existence.

But here?! When water hits metal it definitely makes a noise… and I like it! While you have to listen for it when downstairs, you can’t miss the pelting raindrops when upstairs.

Sinus infection? Breathing polyurethane fumes? A respiratory infection? Allergies?

I’ve had some kind of coughing crud for about three weeks. I COVID tested and it was negative, and I’m too hard-headed to go to the doctor, so I don’t know what I have. I know that coughing has prevented sleep because it’s 100 times worse when lying down. I’ve been sleeping in 2-hour stretches.

But not last night! I slept the whole night through without one single coughing fit. Yippee! But because I did so many things differently, I can’t pinpoint what’s been causing the coughing in the first place.

What led to a full night’s sleep…

So Jerilyn has this crap too and she offered advice. Of course, after 3 weeks, I’d have stood on my head and gargled peanut butter at the stoplight in town if I thought it would’ve made a difference. Her first recommended item was a neti pot…

Into this teacup looking item, you mix a packet of saline stuff (provided) with distilled water. It is the grossest thing I’ve ever done! It felt like I’d jumped off a 150′ cliff into the ocean and forgot to hold my nose!

Next, I created a Vick’s steam room with a warm mist humidifier and spent about 45 minutes in there. I did a slow, 15-minute walk on the treadmill and tanned in the same room for for 20 minutes. And finally, I spent the entire day outside — not in the polyurethane room.

While I don’t know the cause of what I have/had, I do know it’s a whole lot better! If you get the coughing crud, Doctors Shelley and Jerilyn suggest trying the above steps to wellness. πŸ˜‰
