from mowing dirt to a full pool

from mowing dirt to a full pool

Perry mowed over the weekend and it looked like he was being followed by a dust cloud. It’s been so dry around here, the pool was just about ready to get the hose. We haven’t been able to swim for a couple weeks, but I still have high hopes for a day or two before it’s closed for the winter. Keeping it topped off with water and no rain is a pain.

But the skies opened and solved the problem!

The pool is full.

We got just under 2 inches, but it was enough to give the shrubs and trees a good drink and fill the pool to the perfect level. It thundered like crazy, but there wasn’t much wind. Just lots of noise and rain. Upstairs, rain on the metal roof is LOUD… not so much downstairs.

We hadn’t even needed to mow for 2 weeks, and the bean field next to the barndo is about all brown now. I’m hoping it’s because growing season is over, and not because of the lack of precipitation here on the outskirts of the ville.

Now you know: In 2021, a New Zealand woman said she was looking forward to breathing easier and having a straighter nose after doctors removed a calcified Tiddlywink that had been lodged in her nose for 37 years. It was discovered via CT scan after a COVID-19 nasal swab test triggered serious sinus problems.

Here in southern Indiana, nighttime temps are in the 50’s or low 60’s. During the daytime, however, we’re high 70’s to low 80’s. It’s GREAT! In the mornings, I open my windows to get fresh air in, and listening to the pool water and wind chimes is one of the sweetest sounds ever.

Pro tip on purchasing a washable rug…

Do not buy a washable rug in a size that’s simply too big to wash. I dropped a chunk of change on a 14’x20′ Ruggable brand rug. (Over $1200 but who’s counting? Oh, and did I mention I bought TWO at the same size?) Ruggable has great reviews and I have several of them in smaller sizes. They look good after washing and I’ve have had great luck with them.

But the only way you can wash room-sized rugs is with a power washer outside. With 3 hounds, being able to wash rugs is pretty darned important. And you can’t be outside washing rugs in the wintertime, right? So I cut one of those big suckers and made 4, 5’x7′ rugs. I’m still in the process of washing them and binding the seams. Why? Because the CHEAPEST 5’x7′ rug they have — without a pad and with a Labor Day discount — is over $200.

It’s taking me longer to do the job because I have dog problems.

The reason I need so many rugs is because Dharma has mobility challenges — stained concrete floors are harder for her to get around on. She’s also the reason it’s an event just taking a shower around here.

Making the bed isn’t a cake walk either with Hugo around.

That’s the good thing about being retired. There’s no rush to get anything done. Those rugs will be finished when they’re finished. One down and three to go. So very far from perfect, but $10 for binding and carpet glue beats the cost of that same rug in that same size — $380.00. 🫤

Now you know: In Germany, it is illegal to kill any animal that is a vertebrate “without proper reason” like the animal being ill or a danger to humans. Because of this, all German animal shelters are no-kill.

temperature returns to normal, summer hot

For the first time in over a week, the temperature was under 80° yesterday evening. It felt GREAT! We had a bit of rain (at the exact time we were headed to the pool), but nothing bad enough to keep the dogs from wanting out in it. My favorite brother is still in Hawaii and I’m not even jealous.

Happening locally as Pride Month is almost over…

So much back and forth about today’s planned event on Facebook and I’m 100% staying out of it. I’m not a fan of ‘drag queen story time’ or ‘all ages drag show’ (I’m of the opinion there’s no such thing).

The world has certainly changed, hasn’t it? At least events like these are parental choice. I choose not to take the baby of my family and it’s not because I’m afraid it will confuse him or serve as ideological indoctrination. It’s because he’s a meanie.

EDIT… UPDATE…

First, we survived another “be weather aware” night. Although we had a short storm, it wasn’t awful. The worst part was the scary, blaring warnings coming from every device we own. Other areas weren’t so lucky and there’s some awful wide-spread damage... just nothing here or close to my hometown.

I didn’t think there was damage close to me (lots in Columbus and Bloomington), but around 10:30 PM, NaLona had a tree blow down across her truck and roof. No clue what kind of damage is under that tree, but I’d guess the truck is totaled and the roof has damage too. At 10:30 PM, we had NOTHING. Not a drop of rain even… and she’s about a mile from the barndo as the crow flies. Crazy!

I am not a man.

I picked Colette up because Ben was working. Coco took a photo to send to her Dad to let him know we were on our way. She’d just had field day at her school, and like her Dad, she’s not one to smile for photos. (They both think it’s funny or way more impressive to scowl, I guess.) Me? I always crack a big, fake smile.

I planned to look at the camera for a brief second for the shot (I was driving), but didn’t get the chance.

Technology is amazing… until it isn’t.

Since the photo wasn’t great, I thought I’d ask ChatGPT to make us pirates. This is a first-rate example on how you can’t trust AI to always be right.

cool mornings with heavy dew challenge mowing crew

cool mornings with heavy dew challenge mowing crew

My mowing crew (ME!) is ready to tackle the barndo jungle but it’s not ideal mowing weather here in southern Indiana. In the summer when it’s hot, mowing early is preferable before it gets incredibly hot. There’s no danger in that happening today.

thermometer says it's cool

The current challenge is how long it takes for the dew to dissipate leaving the grass dry enough to mow. It’s finally 60° outside but the dew remains. While waiting, I’ve been reflecting on how much growth can happen in just a week. The trees are fully green… FINALLY!

More than a month away from summer!

The first day of summer this year is June 20th so we’ve still got quite a bit of spring. According to the weather you prefer, you can say over a month to endure… or over a month to enjoy.

Which one is it for you?
