Three short recommendations for you today that make me happy:

1. LOST
2. ALLTOP
3. BRAIN CHALLENGE

So they have nothing to do with one another, but the above items are either included simply because I like them, or because they are nothing short of awesome.

LOST
Ben and Amber are addicted. Not a day has gone by in recent months without Ben trying to force me to watch the first couple shows of the first season — me telling him that I didn’t have time. I really thought the whole thing was pretty silly, but kept that to myself. Last night, I tried to humor him by acting mildly interested and promising to give it a try at some point in the near future. He is such an assertive guy (wonder where he gets that trait!), that he proceeds to hook us up right that instant. Ben, Amber, Perry and I watched the first two episodes together, and then I reluctantly turned it off after episode #7. I have a new addiction. Thanks so much, Ben.

ALLTOP
If you love reading news, and also have specific interests that you want to make sure you’re on top of, Alltop is the answer — well almost. You can create a free account, and simply choose feeds from a wide variety of topics, and then view your customized page to catch up on the latest and greatest. I’m still waiting on the ability to add feeds that I love that haven’t made it to Alltop, but it’s still pretty darned handy. Take a look at my page. You know you want to.

BRAIN CHALLENGE
I have this cool app on my iPhone, but you can also download a desktop version as well. It’s been said that people only use 10% of their brain. After a week, Brain Challenge has reported that I’m now up to 12%. Go me! The bad news is, it reports my stress level at 92%. It’s a fun 10 minutes that will get those gears turning with once-per-day tests. It’s like $7 bucks for the full version on both the iPhone and desktop platforms.

scandalous

I feel sorry for Rick Pitino’s family. I do. I do not feel sorry for him.

Louisville’s coach Pitino is about to have a news conference on the whole sex and extortion scandal — you can read about it here. I certainly don’t know if the $3k he paid the chick he had sex with was to go toward health insurance or an abortion. I will even go so far as to say I suspect her rape charges are fabricated. C’mon, she waited 6 years to cry rape — like it’s not rape if you’re getting money for your other children to go to college and monthly money to keep quiet — but the same act becomes rape if the money is cut off and you’re arrested for extortion.

Here’s the skinny on why I’m even talking about this:

Those in the burg are pretty over-the-top on basketball. It IS Indiana. So in the burg, you primarily have college basketball fans of IU, Purdue, UK and L’ville. I could never understand why folks who were born and raised in Indiana wouldn’t support Indiana athletic teams above those from another state. It would be like me cheering for Austin against C’ville.

So I’m vindictive. I admit, there’s a part of me that smirks at this scandal. As a Bobby Knight supporter from waaaay back, yes, even during the time that Pitino was the coach for UK. Over the years, I’ve taken a lot of ribbing over ole’ Bobby’s exploits. He threw a chair — I took grief. He kicked a chair — all the burg’s Kentuckians rubbed it in. It always came back to Knight just not being up to par with the wonderful Pitino.

I’m sure hoping that all those who gave me crap about Bobby Knight will at least be willing to admit Pitino was capable of some bad judgement 6 years ago himself. Again — I feel sorry for his family, but I do not feel empathy for him.

nephews rock

I’ve mentioned Perry’s sister here before — the one with a bajillion kids. Remember? Well, her two boys left those five girls behind and visited the burg. I don’t think they’ve ever seen so many electronic devices in their whole entire lives. Try getting 2 guys away from Wii, computers and iPods for a few photos. Hardest work that I’ve done all day!

thinking about friends

Today my thoughts are with a couple of my friends — both facing challenges that are totally different — but challenges just the same. Just when you think things are ‘normal’, life seems to change it up. Most times when it’s least expected. Here’s hoping for pleasant outcomes and easier days…

reality check

Today the White House rolled out a new website that focuses on health insurance reform and ‘what it really means to you and your family‘. Of course, this is from the perspective of the White House. I’m sure there are a ton of other sites that provide a totally different view of what this reform really means.

You may have already formed an opinion on what you think our government needs to do insofar as Obama’s Healthcare plan, or you may be like me, not really informed enough to make a decision yet. I’ve yet to find an unbiased report that simply compares options. Right now, both sides of the issue are accusing the other of attempting to ‘confuse and scare Americans with half-truths and outright lies’.

I’ve noticed on FaceBook, some of my friends have voted on the issue — some are for reform, others against. Again, I wonder how informed they are, or if it’s just a click of the mouse — no more thought applied than if they were playing Pet Society. Are you informed? If so, please share your thoughts.
