to the talented children of the world…

Jan 14, 2013

I currently have the good fortune to spend a lot of time with my 2 year-old granddaughter, Coco. Every single day she will say something or do something that immediately throws me into the good ole’ way-back machine. Coco is wired tight — Ben was always (and still is) laid-back. Still, there are so many similarities it makes my head spin. And of course, my heart melt. I guess that’s one reason why grandchildren are so endearing.

She loves “muesick”… drums, piano, singing — and even listening. As I’m typing this, she is sitting on my lap looking at the photo below just talking away. The only word I can understand is music. And drawer. (Not sure what that’s all about.)

My Dad would’ve been so ate up with this little girl. I remember when I was little, Dad used to sing a song to me called, “Daddy’s Little Girl,” (that evolved into the song, “That Over 30 Look” years later) and I can remember how cool I thought it was that he would sing just to me. Ben came along and had a musical gift that Dad adored. Even though their taste in music was so very different, it was something they shared. They played music together and the blended country strum on a flattop combined with Metallica on an electric guitar would make me laugh out loud.

Earlier today, I snuck down the hallway and stood in the doorway to watch as Ben played a song on his keyboard while Coco played alongside him on hers. I’ll betcha Dallas McKain was watching too.
