Ten years ago, my buddy Alisa and I talked often about the Casey Anthony case. We had a love/hate relationship with Nancy Grace and we sucked in the news like sponges. All this came to mind as I feel myself being sucked into the Gabby Petitio rabbit hole. If you live under a rock and don’t know what I’m talking about, simply do a Google search and you’ll find plenty to read.
Alisa and I talked about missing Caylee between ourselves 10-years ago. We joked that with our tracking, deduction, and detective skills we could’ve wrapped the case up in half the time it took law enforcement.
What we DIDN’T DO is post our thoughts like they were facts all over social media.
Fast forward ten Internet years (different than human years) and holy cow — things have changed! There are 500 bajillion Internet sleuths posting videos of their opinions on Tiktok, Facebook, Twitter and Reddit. Many are complete with maps and carefully constructed timelines. They’ve analyzed the stickers on the van, found apps used for hiking (noting which trails were marked by Gabby and even how many “likes” the trails had), and have shared photos of potential sightings to ask the masses if they believe it’s Brian.
Do they believe the FBI is watching the poll and will take the highest number of votes as fact? Doubtful. I think some truly believe they’re helping “bring Gabby home,” but I figure the majority of these people are simply looking for clicks — attention.
Just like everyone else… I don’t know if this started as a publicity stunt, if Brian left Gabby on a trail, or if he killed her. The difference is that I also won’t take to social media with claims to know anything.
I will; however, give my non-expert opinion on the subject of mums. I think this mum will flatten out before it ever blooms…
One good rain and it will look like someone sat in the middle of it. 🙂
