seniors aren’t that stretchy

Mar 15, 2022

There are plenty of fitness exercise videos included within the Samsung Health app for users to add to their routines. Me and my trusty new Samsung watch browsed through the offerings.

When I think of ‘senior exercises,’ I picture nursing home residents waving their arms around a little bit so I figured “Senior Conditioning Stretching” would be an ok workout to sample. I set my phone up where I could see the workout video and wondered what I’d use for a chair while thrusting my arms in the air.

The routine started standing up with head and shoulder rolls. Boring! About four minutes in, the side stretches and spine roll-downs felt pretty good…. maybe not so bad to do before my upcoming 500 mile treadmill walk. 😉 But then came lunges. We all know those require a bit of balance and I’m wondering, WTH? Seniors?

Not gonna’ lie — my heart rate kicked up a bit.

But nothing like it did when the next stretching exercise was squats. SQUATS! Who knew that seniors around the world could do squats… one right after another… with their arms outstretched in front of them and nothing for balance or support. And not just a little knee bend either, you guys. Full on squat down and stand up over and over and over again.

I was never so happy to see a 40-second break in my entire life. Dharma knew I needed it.

Next up was a repeat of everything — including the darned squats — before finishing. The perky 20-something leading the routine was smiling while I was sucking air. I have a birthday coming up in a few days and I didn’t feel all that old until the moment I finished senior stretching. Sheesh!

COVID UPDATE:

Ben is MUCH better and I’m relieved he’s almost feeling normal again. The rest of us are still feeling fine.

TIL (Today I Learned): The U.S. Airforce assigns aircraft to be “Wild Weasels”. These planes act as bait to draw anti-aircraft fire — allowing the squad to locate and destroy the anti-aircraft batteries. Their motto is “YGBSM” or “You Gotta Be Shittin’ Me”.
