My Dad, Dallas McKain, was born on June 9, 1929. Although he passed on August 1, 2004, I think about him often and miss him dearly. I still have the article that Curt Kovener wrote that appeared in The Crothersville Times — it meant a lot then, and it does yet today. The photo used was taken a short time before his death — when his friends drove all the way to his home in Brandenburg, KY, to allow him to enjoy music one last time.
I heard a new “Dad story” this week…
I had a conversation with a preacher/friend by phone and although we didn’t talk politics, we did talk about challenges we face in today’s climate.
We talked about my Dad and he told me a story I hadn’t heard before. He said that when he and friends played baseball in a nearby lot in the summer heat, Dad would show up with Icee Pops (those frozen flavored sticks in plastic) from his grocery store, McKain’s Market, and pass them out for free. He said it was Dad being a nice guy… but also an amazing marketer. Those same guys would go to the store and buy 2 or 3 Icee Pops (among other purchases) once the games were over.
Happy birthday to a wonderful man, and a great Dad. 😞
