I don’t remember a time when hitchhiking “was a thing.”
When I think of hitchhikers, they all look like the people shown in photos from Woodstock in 1969. Hippies basically.

Something I didn’t know… hitchhiking was widespread during the Depression and World War II era in the 30’s and 40’s. People often needed inexpensive transportation, and getting a ride from a stranger was socially acceptable.
While still common in the 50’s, the 60’s is the period most associated with hitchhiking culturally. College students, young people, travelers, and members of the counterculture frequently hitchhiked.
By the time I was allowed to go anywhere, people were smarter.
By the late 70’s and 80’s, hitchhiking declined substantially as concerns about crime and personal safety increased. I never once hitchhiked anywhere.
I DO remember one guy from my hometown hitchhiking to Seymour every day to visit his wife in the hospital (or maybe his daughter… I can’t remember for sure), but that doesn’t really count. I gave him a ride a time or two even though he didn’t have a thumb in the air or a guitar on his back. And I knew him!

Perry and I drove yesterday to Sam’s Club and didn’t see even one hitchhiker. We didn’t expect to, and wasn’t disappointed that we didn’t.
What WAS disappointing was the $10 container of grapes we bought that went into the trash. Why? Because they were “Cotton Candy Grapes.” I had never heard of cotton candy grapes but they are nasty, you guys. They are green grapes bred to taste like spun sugar and are only available from July to September.
