Social = Public

Sep 8, 2009

According to Mashable, who quotes research firm, Harris Interactive, “45% of Employers Now Screen Social Media Profiles“. So if you’re looking for a job in this competitive marketplace, you can figure that 1 of every 2 places you apply will check you out on Facebook and Twitter before considering you for employment. Seriously.

So do you understand the concept?? It’s SOCIAL media. I crack up when I read some posts on Facebook. Teenagers of friends and relatives that post stuff like they think their school friends are the only ones that will read them. Did y’all forget you asked to be my friend too?? Like I’m not gonna’ tell your Mom that your friend tagged you in a photo posted to Facebook where you’re spraying Pam onto a lighter and making flames shoot out in the kitchen?!? But there are tons of adults that are just as bad — many are worse!

Like this — I wonder what that Shelley Erwin chick did to have a $5k bounty on her head, or what the chick on the right was thinking when she allowed that shot to be captured. These photos aren’t real. If I WERE looking for a different job, I would hope that my prospective employer would realize I have a sense of humor and not be an idiot. (You can go to http://www.photofunia.com and make your own incriminating photos!)
It's social!

If these WERE real, (and not just clean, stupid but fun photo mockups), I would NOT post them here, on FaceBook, or Twitter. Maybe this post has you thinking back to a photo that your friend shared on Facebook where you were hammered at a party. Or maybe you’re thinking about that post you made saying your boss was a turd while you were playing on the Internet at work. Dontcha’ wonder if they were seen by someone you would prefer didn’t see them? These are simply the risks you take with social media. Social = Public.
