Crazy week is almost over and I used a song title for a post because my brain is blank. My sincere hope is that it will get stuck in your head.

Jimmy Buffett has always been a favorite of mine. Odd because my taste in music typically isn’t mild or close to country. Still, he’s got it goin’ on and he’s old, you guys. Now 74!! For some reason, I also don’t think about him having a wife. I picture him barefoot either on a sailboat having a margarita or recording with the Coral Reefer Band. His wife (2nd one) is 69 and they’ve been married for over 40 years.

I’m old too… just not THAT old yet. Old enough to get a COVID vaccine in Indiana, and I’m happy about that. Feeling normal so I’m guessing my “symptoms” were merely from lack of sleep. Something is sure working to bring down the numbers — check this out:

Does it look to you like we’re now about where we were in July of last year? Maybe a tad better even? I’m of the opinion it’s good enough to book my next Disney trip. This time, I’m going to sneak even more photos of my son taking selfies. I think I only captured around 20 last time. 🙂

TIL (Today I Learned): Ring was on Shark Tank and walked away without a deal. Ring later sold to Amazon for $1 billion.

We all know that icicles “have been known to kill people.” This means that our home has the potential for mass murder.

death by icicle?

More snow this morning, but it has warmed up from the 0’s to the 20’s. I ventured out to the mailbox, but no one has cleaned the porch or the sidewalk — or even the driveway for that matter.

In the land of COVID, that doesn’t matter since visitors aren’t likely and the driveway is good enough to get in and out of. That PLUS the fact that we’re going to be in the 40’s with rain by Sunday, working to clear snow seems like a big ole’ waste of time and energy. Bigger problems are the horizon… like… dogs going outside in the muck and tracking it all over the house by weekend.

The peskies got their 2nd COVID vaccination yesterday and all is well. My favorite brother, living in Nevada, is trying to get an appointment now that their state has lowered the age to 65+ but can’t get in anywhere. Me? I keep refreshing the Indiana vaccine site to see when my age group opens up. Nothing yet. 🙁

TIL (Today I learned): Brain scans have found that women are more responsive to romance after they have been fed. Food may be the way to a man’s heart, but it’s the way to women’s heart, as well.

Barely 7:00 AM and I’m on my second cup of coffee this morning. Just a bit over 3 hours sleep. I’m not even sure why I woke so early but I simply couldn’t fall back asleep. You ever do that?

Sitting here with dogs sleeping at my feet, I’m thinking about the upcoming holiday. We have the craziest plans ever this year. My granddaughter will be spending Thanksgiving Day with her Mom, so we’re doing the first T-Day round tomorrow. She wants shrimp fettuccini alfredo, and that’s exactly what she’ll get. But it’s not something you can eat the following day.

That means I’ll also do a more traditional meal for Thanksgiving. After reading an earlier post, Alisa provided some written recipes (simple ones she thought I might be able to handle) and I’m going to give at least one of them a whirl. Thanksgiving won’t look like this in 2020…

And then, Perry promised to help me do some Christmas lights outside. A few of the neighbors are already lit up. At least Merida can’t get to the front yard decorations –unlike the tree that’s deteriorating fast as more ornaments bite the dust.

Although the peskies will be home, they’ve already let me know they plan to hunker down as not to risk COVID exposure. Perry will eat and Ben will likely get a meal to take home. Although it’s sad we don’t get to spend time as a family, I’m still so very grateful my family is healthy.

My good friend, Alisa, is the best cook I know. She gives me recipes I never try. By giving me recipes, I really mean that she rattles off ingredients in one looong run-on sentence. To me it sounds like, “Blah blah blah, milk, blah blah flour, blah blah blah.” At the end she always exclaims, “It’s really easy!

No. No it’s not.

Since March, I’ve spent more on groceries than I have in the past 10 years combined. I’ve cooked all my standby dishes that everyone seems to like… multiple times. I’m famous (probably because no one has gotten sick yet) for my chili. I make a mean chicken fettuccini alfredo. I’m good with gravy. My deviled eggs are amazing. Ummm… that’s it! Tada!

Post-Rona, I’ve been cooking like I think I’m in line to be the next Betty Crocker. I’ve been saving recipes to try and have dabbled a bit making new things. My chicken nuggets with Marion Kay breading have made it to the good list. Yippee!

Our family has never made a big deal over Thanksgiving. Nanny used to cook — pies the night before and early to rise to cook until grace was said at the table — but once she died, no one wanted to be passed the Turkey Day baton. No one wanted ME to take it, for sure.

That’s life. You don’t always get what you want. I don’t want to cook; others probably would be happier if I didn’t. As my favorite granddaughter says…

You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.

I just got word the Peskies will be home for the holiday! Because of the RONA, I’m going to make a traditional meal and just let everyone know to pick up a sampling.

And I’m going to try something new, you guys! Some sweet potato fancy shit stuff. Now don’t get in your head I’m making this dish all from scratch or anything, but for me — I’m going pretty far out of my cooking comfort zone. You’ll know how it turned out as soon as I do. 😉

I get frustrated with the current situation, but for all the disruptions and challenges, I still feel grateful my family is healthy. Even though work is in the toilet, I still have food to screw up. This too shall pass. And I have this to look at…

ho ho ho

TIL (Today I Learned): The Lewis & Clark expedition only suffered one casualty. Dysentery, snake bites, a dislocated shoulder, venereal disease and Lewis being shot in the buttocks after being mistaken for an elk all threatened the group’s well-being, but the only man to die did so as a result of a burst appendix. my favorite brother’s covid birthday

my favorite brother’s covid birthday

Today is the birthday of my favorite brother. I looked for a normal photo to share on Facebook but all I found was this…

I refrained from sharing… but only because we have so many clients connected on social media.

Scott’s always been braver than I am — he’s currently vacationing in Kauai… during a pandemic. A COVID test before leaving; another upon arrival; and yet another to travel to Maui — but WAIT! He didn’t make it to Maui because the test can’t be older than 72 hours to travel and they didn’t receive their results in time.

I know it doesn’t sound awful to be stuck in a fabulous tropical place, but it sort of is when you’ve paid for accommodations elsewhere. And what if you have a positive test while there? Why… you quarantine for 2 weeks. Again, not an awful place to be stuck if you don’t have symptoms and can afford an extended stay away from home. I guess I’m just a big ole’ chicken.

And my sort of niece, Katie, had knee surgery scheduled this week that was postponed after she tested positive upon arrival at the hospital. She’s feeling fine but has the entire clan quarantined for at least 10-days. Will this EVER end?

And political posts on FB and the presidential race? They’re probably not going to be over with for a good while yet either. It’s like the photo below… Merida is all the people frantically hijacking other people’s posts like anyone actually cares what they have to say — and I’m Dharma.

I seriously saw the following comments to Trump supporters:

  1. After a post that questioned election results, a lady commented to let the post’s author know her dead parents would be disappointed and she couldn’t believe in God because of the way she voted.
  2. Another shamed a Trump voter and said it was a vote to kill him — because he’s not white and happens to be gay, he said he would be killed like the Jews.
  3. And yet another guy posted a photo of himself with his voter sticker and Trump mask and had to delete it because all the comments were causing his phone battery to go dead. (One chick posted 22 hate comments before he deleted it.)

I’m just reading it all… still looking like Dharma and keeping my mouth shut and fingers quiet on the keyboard.

TIL (Today I Learned):  Contrary to its clichĂ©d use in crime fiction, it takes at least five minutes of inhaling an item soaked in chloroform to render a person unconscious. Read more about chloroform here — unless you’re Casey Anthony or her Mom…
