Just since I’ve been up, the temperature has gone down 5 degrees. Wind chill temps this morning on the outskirts of the Ville are sub-zero. Early flurries have stopped, and inside the barndo it’s toasty… thanks to Perry.
If I didn’t have to go with Mr. Pesky, I’d ice skate instead.
High winds got the best of the pool cover. It wasn’t even a fair fight! Even with support from wood pieces, the cover’s shameful defeat is in full display, leaving a frozen mass that could double as an ice-skating rink.
Mr. Pesky has an eye appointment today and I’ll be driving him to it. So for now, I’m savoring the last of the morning warmth with my own personal heater. 🙂
Now you know: Minecraft became the first video game ever to reach 300 million copies sold worldwide. This equates to it having sold 47 copies per minute, every minute, since the game’s release in 2011.
No blizzard or squalls here in the Ville, just light snow and frigid wind that will freeze your face off in about 10 seconds. It’s miserable. And it’s not even pretty… nothing special.
Embracing the cozy…
Might as well make use of the downtime to snuggle on the couch with whichever hound makes it to the coveted spot at my feet first. It happened to be Merida this time around.
Time stuck inside looks different for everyone. My Momma is working on a puzzle, and Perry, Ben and I are playing video games. Ben’s a dwarf miner in his game, Perry is a fabulous baseball player, and I’ve been trying my hand at horticulture — strange horticulture.
No one around here has been playing chess – and no axes have been used. 😉
Now you know: Chess games are banned at Russian Antarctic Stations because in 1959 one researcher attacked another with an axe out of anger after losing a game.
Week #3 of “52 weeks of the hound.”
Dharma has this thing she loves — standing between the legs of anyone for butt scratches…
It was windy and rainy for almost the entire day yesterday here in the outskirts of the Ville. It wasn’t just dainty rain either — at times, it was the hard, pouring kind. Dogs still need to go out and and that leads to wet dog stink. ARG!
Compared to what’s coming, rain at 50 degrees is not so bad.
High winds (up to 40mph gusts) combined with dog stink is bad, but we’re under a weather warning for Sunday to Friday. If that system materializes, it will be a whole lot worse.
Wind chill temps from -10 to -25 are forecasted! That’s below zero, y’all. I’m confident in the ability to stay warm here at the barndo, but I sure worry about people and pets when it’s so frigid.
My practice retirement time off will soon be only a memory. 😩
I’m supposed to start back to “real” work next Monday. I was dreading it, but since today was crazy busy and I’m not getting paid AND I survived, I guess I won’t yet throw in the towel. But I sure want to.
I’m happy for my friends that have retired — and I’m happy for those who love their jobs and don’t dream about it. I just wish I could join one or the other instead of staying here on this fence.
Now you know: Alaska is roughly about one-fifth the size of the entire United States mainland (contiguous). If overlaid onto a map, Alaska would stretch from the West Coast to the East Coast
My freezers are filled to the brim and I have more stuff that I have to fit in them. Honestly, I could probably get by simply buying milk, eggs and bread until 2030. I took NaLona to the store over the weekend because they had 10 pound boxes of bacon on sale in Scottsburg… I came home with 30 lbs. plus other selections and have no idea what I’m going to do with it all.
We all go through rough patches from time to time, right?
NaLona is going through a rough patch right now. Her Momma, Barb, isn’t well. She’s past the point of walking, standing, dressing herself, etc., etc. Her brother, Mac, has diabetes and has lost both legs. (It doesn’t help that he’s a big ole’ boy on a limited income.) NaLona is the caregiver to both of them and the lifting of bodies and wheelchairs have taken their toll.
She has to have back and neck surgery. No other options, Barb will have to go to a nursing home while NaLona heals. Mac will have to have help getting to his wound care (and other) appointments because NaLona won’t be able to keep that up either. She’s trying to arrange something for him, but so far, nothing is working out.
Just a reminder to be grateful for everything, and pray for those who struggle.
Now you know: In 1966, President Kennedy’s brain disappeared from the National Archives.
Dharma has some slight mobility issues — nothing horrible yet, but you won’t see her jetting around anywhere. She was never one to entertain an audience with zoomies. Currently, her perception that “floors without rugs are lava” includes “and deck steps are fire.”
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night…
No matter the time of day or conditions outside, I am equipped with a pink lead and my medieval peasant shoes acting as her escort. About 50% of the time, just laying the lead across her back is enough. Once down the steps, she’s just fine.
The upside is she at least doesn’t need an escort to come back up the steps. She can do that all by herself.
Unlike Dharma, Merida is athletic.
Merida bounds off the steps and jumps in the air as poor Dharma navigates her way down two small steps to the yard. She’ll grab the leash and pull Dharma off if she moves too slowly. She’s our entertaining little show off with more energy than any dog deserves.
Now you know: Queen Anne of Great Britain had seven miscarriages, five stillbirths, two children who died shortly after birth, two who died in infancy, and one who died at age 11. She left no heirs and was succeeded by her second cousin.
